the point of the Weapons mate is so you do not have to keep track of your explosive cannon balls, if lets say you're shooting event ships etc, or doing scrolls, because alot of the time you don't want tons of explosive ammo on your ship(added weight slows you down), but also don't want to be switching back and forth between screens to restock when you're in some big fights.
After purchasing the Weapons Mate from the market cove , you can find him next to your Repair Ship icon on your task bar on the sea chart.selecting his icon will open another small menu showing exposive cannonballs.if the picture has a red circle on it he is not active and you must then select the picture to activate him. As soon as your stock of ammunition drops below 10.000 elite balls,the Weapons Mate will automatically buy 10.000 new elite balls for the normal price of 5.000 pearls..(If you have a bazaar discount your Weapons Mate will be glad to use it.. so whatever you pay for pballs when you purchase them yourself, your Weapons Mate does too.He can also be made inactive by following the same method.
