When I realised that the beams could get me 144k hp if I would have 80 and put them on all my decks, I decided to try and get them all, with the purpose to be able to repair up to 144k hp, then put them off and put cannons on, so I had extra HP which could be useful in certain situations.
Today I tried it for the first time, as I have 71 elite beams now, and with extra hp it is easier event npc shooting.
So I repaired up to 140k, then put my cannons back on, and what do I see?
I am on 96k hp again!

Please tell me I didn't use my gold and pearls for nothing, if it should be working this way.
And if possible, can it be changed so that when you put your beams on and repair to 144k hp, you put your cannons back on and you keep your extra hp? Would be appreciated.

I am sorry to say that yes that is the way it works. The idea is that the beams add support to your ship if you remove the beams you lose the added protection. Just like you can have more cannons than can shoot but you only have so much room, or port holes if you will, where you can shoot cannons out of.
