Ahoy Mateys!
Many a yarn told in the dark and smoky taverns of the Western Territories. Most turn out to be tall tales, or fables fit for frightening infants - but the following story is as true as it is tragic: Once upon a time, when this corner of the world was still fresh and new, four brave Captains led an expedition into the frozen north. Their aim was to scout out islands suitable for possible new colonies. The Icerock Narrows, however, are bleak and dangerous, barely capable of sustaining life - and the Captains were quick to decide that they had no future in those icy climes. If they'd only known how wrong they were... The Captains hove to and pointed their bows south, but it was already too late. They had penetrated too far into the ice, and it froze back around them - they could neither sail forwards nor retreat. Grim, they prepared themselves for the worst - but there was no preparing for what was to follow. Terrible howls tore through the storm winds on the second night. The ships were attacked by monstrous wolves. Some crewmen fell to them as others fought; some, driven gibbering into the dark, lie frozen in the ice to this day. They were the lucky ones, as the remainder faced a fate more terrible still than death. If bitten by a wolf, they themselves were transformed into wolf-creatures that ran on two legs, both vicious and intelligent. So, night after night, more and more of the expedition's members became the victims of these wolves, trapped in the ice with no hope of help. It is said that not a single one escaped; none were ever seen again. The story also states that these wolf-men, known as Frostwolves, built an empire. of their own and ruled it ruthlessly. How many of the story's details are perfectly true, only the frozen sea knows for sure - but nothing could be more real than the threat currently heading to the Western Territories! More and more sailors report that ships that "drag winter behind them" are raiding trade routes, islands are covered with ice and snow and... colonized!
