Is the square next to 'subscribe to newsletter' checked off on your account settings page?

Yes, the box is already checked and I hit change. Does this mean I am subscribed and I won't receive an email that I need to click on a link in order to confirm everything?

If the box is checked, you should be subscribed. You would get an e-mail if you changed your e-mail address (I 'changed' my e-mail address to the same e-mail address and got an e-mail confirming my e-mail address change).
