If one is to upgrade their drones what exactly does it upgrade- lasers or sheilds that is on the drone or is that a waste?

it upgrades both. NOT a waste - unless you have the uridium of course.

when you upgrade each or your drones either it the iris or the flax it will give a bonus to both damage and sheilds depending whats on the upgraded drones at the time its well worth doing. and i advise you to upgrade ALL drones befor upgrading anything else

That is correct. The bonus obtained from an upgraded drone is applied to lasers and shields, whichever is equipped to that particular drone. The maximum bonus possible at level 16 is 6% damage for lasers or 15% for shields.
