How do I read the map?

I see all these quests that give me zones like X-1, X-2, etc....but I can't for the life of me figure out how to tell where those areas are.

The 'X' reflects which company you're from. If you're from MMO (Mars), the X is 1. EIC (Earth)- the X is 2, and VRU (Venus) - the X is 3. If you check above your radar map, you should see the current position of your ship, for example 2-1. When you use a portal, you'll see a series of maps which are labeled. All you have to do is substitute X for your company value

Awesome, so that basically refers to an entire map. So if I'm tasked to find 20 ore from that Map do I just wander around aimlessly and hope I find it, or is there some method of detecting it from a distance?

nope you must wander in the map and hope for the best!!
