Because you're a viable target when you are out of the safety zones of the space stations and portals. If you don't want to be attacked, stay in the X-1 maps. Otherwise, I would suggest getting with some friends and playing together in masse to help make yourself not so viable as a single target, and at the very least maybe you can outrun one of your friends in a slower ship.
Remember, you don't have to be able to outrun the enemy, you just need to outrun someone slower than you.

Glad to see you believe in team work bud....every man for himself and run for the hills!
When it is you and 4 other small ships vs. a Goliath, that is just 5 enemy ship kills for the Goliath. Why give them the kill, just run. Now, if there was a reasonable chance of you and your friends could win the fight, I would stay and fight. As for teamwork, I spend plenty of time in the lower maps helping new players, and plenty of time with my clan. I just thought it was a funny saying is all.
