When you're under attack, is there any way of telling how big the attacking force is? Can the spy be send to investigate the attack?

No there is no way to tell, how big a force that are attacking you.. Many players use this advantage to send fake attacks (only 1 infantry) to confuse the enemy and hide big attaks.

You can sometimes tell what has been sent against you by the runtime of the attacks

But only if you have a spy report from the attacking castle.
