View Full Version : Help piloting craft
Maybe its just me, but the controls in this game feel pretty horrid. Trying to find targets in space can be very difficult-even using the Target Enemy button near draedis it doesnt help you orient towards it, none of the camera options seem that smooth, and turning is not responsive enough... So it seems to me.
Would like some tips to be able to manuever remotely decently, and how to find a target in space, I have no problems picking up controls generally, but this one, I cant.
Personally I think the controls are terrible, but if there are some key elements I just dont know, I would like to try to get things going smoothly.
If your playing with a keyboard & mouse, use the mouse to right click on your enemy target(s) as they move about you in space, while using your keyboard to control your craft speed and make minor turns. Depending on your ping the game has a habit of making a tiny vertical or horizontal adjustment with one key press, but two or three sequential key presses will send your ship spinning 180 degrees. So generally I find using the right click to be the best method for targeting & following a target.
And when fighting NPC/AI use the "camera looks at target" camera-mode, so your target doesn't wind around behind you, sometimes the game drops this setting and puts it back to default, but just switching it back over isn't that big of a deal (note: you can cycle camera angles with 'v').
Also, try zooming out a bit.
Can you use a joystick?
you really just have to practice and get use to it
just adjust your settings the way you see fit
that work for you the most.
with the right equipment and settings and just
grind with that for a few days and you will get
use to it.
Can you use a joystick?
I use a track ball. It seems to work simmilar to a joystick. For most NPCs I can, once I am behind them, it is relatively easy to stay behind them.
What I think should be added is the ability to re-map hot keys. Speed should be adjustable with hot keys too. I know the Q and W turn turn on max speed and turn off speed to zero, but I would like to increase and decrease speed incrimentally.
There already is a setting for that. You just need to look.
It takes practice but here is the way I do it. I have the follow target camera on I select the target using the mouse and then right click to make the ship fly towards. if they manuever pure horizontal or vertical I use the keys and switch to mouse right click when they center. if they are not I hold the mouse right button down and point the mouse ahead of the target or at it. As a note the key will turn you faster than the mouse because the mouse is slow to begin the turn and slow to end it. This is also good to know when you are evading.

I am now finding that using a combination of the keypad and trackball/mouse works well. Using WASD allows sharper turns and pulling up and divining is more responsive with the keyboard. The trackball/mouse is great for following a target and staying on its tail. Remamber to reduce speed. Moving slower allows for sharper turns.
Approach a target at an angle, not head on. Forword guns have a 75 degree angle of fire. If I am taking damage, stear at an angle to the enemy fire and hit boosters. Get out of his angle of fire. Once it passes...and it may be quick...booster off and a sharp turn towards the target. Then I can follow using the trackball mouse.
I cut speed to half or even one third in a dogfight. Hold down the right button and wiggle around while following, contantly changing my trajectory. Use boosters to keep withing weapon's optimum range, about 250 (I think it's meters).
Putting gyrostabilizers on your ship will make it's turning radius smaller. There is a skill that help turn faster too.
