View Full Version : I Guess I Just Don't Get It

As the title says....I just don't get it. Why is it the meatbags feel they must use profanity whilst flying around in their soon-to-be-scrapheaps or feel that they are not experiencing the game to its fullest? I've always found it more politic and expedient to be polite to others, even those who are wingmates. What is with this human fascination with profanity? Is swearing at the computer monitor not enough to satisfy this strange urge? Do humans not care what example they set for the young meatsacks of the Colostomy fleet?

Please, enlighten me (in other words....discuss).

Nothing like internet anonymity to breed a new generation of filth spewers...

Gratefully, I haven't seen anything like this on the US server since I started playing, although personally it would bother me more to see folks acting OOC than actually swearing.

It's ironic that in this instance, one can't evoke Wheaton's law without, well, possibly offending someone. But truthfully, I don't think it's worth worrying about. Greater Internet Frakwad Theory notwithstanding, as has been pointed out elsewhere, there really are cultural differences in language and folks aren't going to be any too focused on self-editing in the middle of an arcade game.

Which is not to suggest that people don't know better or can't learn, just to note that the cumulative effect is to move towards the lowest common denominator (or the center, depending on your perspective). Myself? I was online long before there was an internet, and I've always advised people that it isn't even worth bothering with unless you're willing to develop a thick skin.

Well, for you Cylons to hear it, they would have had to use the open channel or been whispering. If it was a whisper, they don't have to worry about the example they are setting to young meatsacks because they are talking to a specific toaster. If it was the open channel, I guess they are like those Real World nutcases screaming for attention. But depending on your definition of profanity, it could be these people were demonstrating that they are fluent in BSG lingo.

I was more referring to all of the reports here on the forums of chat bans due to self-admitted swearing in system chat, and all of the complaining from people who feel that they should be able to use profanity anytime they want. One poster even went so far as to say that it's necessary for their gaming experience. I just have a hard time wrapping my head around this, so to speak.

Well i would have to say that the cylon players or from what i have heard the "toasters" arnt any better than the "meatbags" it is part of the human nature to use profanity. some more than others or even not at all. But profanity is everywhere. The player DONT NEED to use it to better there gaming experience. From my gaming experience the players who do use it the most are usually between the age of 14-20 although we all use profanity including myself, i even catch myself on it some times trying to get rid of such scum out of my vocabulary. What the players need to realize is that PC games that have a chat system usually wont tolerate such words, now i have played a game that did nothing about it even after many players including myself has said something needs to be done about it. and for trying to report it and be the player that stands up to it trying to do right i actually got banned from the game.

As far is BP and there games go i know they dont allow it at all, the players may get away with a few short cuts or loop holes finding other ways to make a point using words like "meatbags" can be taken offencivly by some players. For this reason i am glad this game has honorable moderators to watch the forums as well as the chats :)

If I am not mistaken the Chat MODs should be on full alert with what is now an Open Beta. Meaning there wont be too many players getting away with the usual.

LOL I am no angel, but I think sometimes goading gets mistaken and in PvP people often get carried away.

I haven't seen much bad language on the chat. There is one particular CYLON that likes to talk trash excessively. I have no problem with trash talking, but this guy takes it to far. It is like pouring salt in an open wound just to see someone suffer more. For a Cylon, he is sure a display of petty human emotion.

But on the original OP, I don't get it either.

I got banned for saying sh*t in regular jest while talking to friends, whom of which I either knew personally or have played with before. I rarely say it, but it was more of just because it was around buds and it was said before a sentence to inform them I died when they needed me: "sh*t, I got caught in a trap and I can't make it, jump without me" type of comment.

Being around friends you get to know you have a certain way of talking with them, and this is why I said it without even realizing it. I'm fine with being banned even though it wasn't used to insult nor was it really intentional considering I say that to my friends without even really thinking twice about it. But even though I'm fine with taking the punishment, it still starts to ruin the whole experience, especially considering the weekend is the best time for me to play only to now not have any way to communicate which means it's better off not playing until the ban is gone. I didn't ruin anyone elses experience, I didn't offend anyone, and it was used as a off-handed pretext addition in a sentence to those squadmates that I know and would've thought that use as normal.

The unfortunate thing is I was supposed to be banned for an hour, and its way passed that time and theres no word of whether or not it'll be longer or if I'm perma banned.

Your banned for 24 hours as far as I know...

I got banned for referring to my own arse getting shot up to my wingmates so they'd get the target off me... rather annoying. I know not to swear in the game cause I don't really swear at all in real life unless I get hurt and do it out of reaction.

Wow, I'm glad I didn't buy that 350,000 Cubits package for $99.99 that I was planning to. I may just tire out of the game if the bans are this severe even just for a simple jest not ment in any way to insult or offend, nor in any company other than squadmates whom I know.

If you feel a ban is unfair please fill out a support ticket. The conversation will be reviewed and reversed if it is deemed unwarranted. Many bans have been reversed after reveiw, but you have to send in the support ticket. Make sure to include your game name and ID#.
